For a long time, I thought I wanted to go into environmental concept design; full on digital painting of environments for video games, while working for a game studio. That was up until the spring semester of junior year here at PCA&D. The book jacket assignment we did really changed the trajectory of everything about my work and where I wanted to go with it. I’ve loved novels of many kinds for as long as I can remember: fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, thrillers, and more. One such series I stumbled across years ago was Wereworld by Curtis Jobling. The writing is excellent and I wanted to bring this series the recognition it deserves.
Wereworld Re-imagined is a product of that desire. I’ve created book jackets and new hardback bindings along with end papers for all six books of the series, as well as full two page spread illustrations for each of the six parts of book one. I wanted my graphite landscapes to really stand out as the main event of my show, so I kept a lot of the other design elements simple to bring things together as a cohesive body of work. For the jackets themselves, I crafted animal silhouettes to match the namesake of each book, and featured a relevant landscape within.. The spines of each book feature a sword exemplifying a faction in the book.
